About Filippo
I grew up in Italy playing ice hockey from the age of four and continued competing until I was 27, including at Serie A level and winning two Italian championships.
From my teenage years, traditional gym training became a major part of preparing for hockey. I trained hard, became stronger and built muscle, but over time I started questioning how much of that work was actually transferring to my performance on the ice.
I was stronger in the gym, but I didn’t necessarily feel like a better athlete. At times, I felt heavier, slower and less efficient in my movement.
I was also dealing with recurring lower-back and shoulder pain from injuries that had never fully resolved. Despite being strong and physically fit on paper, there were periods when even walking for more than ten minutes could aggravate my symptoms.
That contradiction made me start looking at training differently.
Around 2014, I discovered Functional Patterns.
In 2016, I completed the Functional Patterns Human Foundations course. I began working with clients in 2018 and have continued developing my education and practical experience in the methodology ever since.
In 2022, I joined Functional Patterns Melbourne, where I continue working with clients today.
I currently hold the HBS4 Human Biomechanics Specialist qualification, the highest level of Human Biomechanics Specialist education currently offered by Functional Patterns.
My broader professional education also includes a qualification in remedial massage therapy, although my work today is focused on Functional Patterns, biomechanics and movement training.
Today, I move and train better than I did when I was younger, I’m essentially pain-free, and I feel better physically and mentally than I have at any previous point in my journey. That experience has heavily influenced the way I approach training with my clients today.
Functional Patterns is a training methodology focused on improving how the human body moves, with particular emphasis on fundamental human movements such as standing, walking, running and throwing.
Rather than looking at muscles and joints only in isolation, the approach considers how different areas of the body work together and how movement mechanics influence the way forces are distributed through the body.
My role is to apply those principles to the individual in front of me, based on their history, current movement and goals.
I’ve been training clients privately since 2018, alongside my work at Functional Patterns Melbourne.
I live in Werribee and want to make this type of individualised movement training more accessible to people in the area where I live, without requiring them to travel across Melbourne.
In-person sessions in Werribee take place from my private home training studio, where I work with a limited number of clients in a quiet, focused environment.
